Closing the last of the fluent speaker in my family
Last Monday my Aunt Cookie passed away. I have been learning from her since my mother died eleven years ago. Cookie was a fluent speaker all her life until recently. It's true what they say "If you don't use it, you lose it". Two months ago I was speaking with her about our language and asked "Auntie do you still speak fluently?" guess I always assumed she did. She said she use to, but with no one to speak to she too has lost the language. To this I believe she has it but it is submersed inside her, she did state she did understand very well what is being spoken when there is a fluent speaker speaking. It bewilders me when I think of all the time I wasted when I should of put my efforts into my own language and culture. I pray for our youths today so they do not let what is left of our Ojibwe way of life escape them and that they have the desire to know themselves as an Anishinabe. This is the hardest time for me for she was also a mother, mentor, and child in my eyes.

Boozhoo Donna: My earlier comment vanished in cyberspace I see! I just wanted to let you know how sorry I , how sorry we are for your loss. Sometimes all we can do in these difficult times is turn the loss into a greater impetus for revitalization in ourselves and our families? Please know you are in our thoughts and our prayers :) Weweni go ayaan.
